cherokee artist verna bates
VERNA BATES is a member of Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma. She began making Cherokee gourd art in 1995 and specializes in handmade Cherokee Gourd Masks, which are traditionally made by hand-stitching. The masks are decorated with feathers, fur, shell, pearls, copper, leather, etc. She also makes decorative gourd bowls and dippers.

Verna is a self-taught artist and strives to incorporate a bit of Cherokee history, myth or it's language by means of wood burning, painting or etching onto each piece of gourd art. She has won numerous awards and her art is collected by both, private and corporate collectors across the U.S. and abroad.

Verna owns and operates, Gourds, Etc an art studio and gallery that offers authentic handmade Cherokee art for immediate purchase including one-of-a-kind Cherokee gourd masks, gourd art, paintings, jewelry, tree ornaments, decorative mugs and more. Periodic gourd art workshops are offered.  All gourds used for art are grown in a garden located on studio property.  Visitors are welcome to view the garden area to better understand the process of making gourd art.

Gourds, Etc also hosts an annual Christmas Art Show during the first Saturday and Sunday in December with guest American Indian artists offering extraordinary art and gift ideas in every price range.  Gourds, Etc can accommodate small tours by appointment.
